Frequently Asked Questions

Is Basecamp Pet Friendly?

No, we are not pet friendly.

Do the tipis have climate control?

Yes! In the summer months the Basecamp tipis have evaporative coolers, and in the winter we provide space heaters and electric blankets. It should still be thought of as "glamping" though. Bring your warm clothes in the winter if the forecast for your arrival shows cooler temperatures.

What time is check-in and check-out?

We have a self check-in process that allows folks to come any time they'd like. No need to check in with us if you're expecting a late arrival. Check-in is any time after 3pm. Check-out is by 10 a.m.

I booked a room, now I have additional questions!

You will receieve a PDF document with self check-in instructions 5-7 days prior to your check-in date. This will have information about accessing the property, wi-fi network names, and lots of other important information to make your stay comfortable and safe! Please keep an eye out for this as it can often end up in a spam or junk folder. As always, feel free to reach out to us over email if you have questions not covered in these FAQ's.

Do you have wi-fi?

We pay for the fastest service available in the Big Bend region. All of our properties, including the tipis, are equipped with wi-fi routers. This does not in any way guarantee internet will be available for your stay. We are incredibly remote (which is probably why you're coming to visit us!) and county-wide outages are a real thing.

Do you provide firewood?

All of our properties come with fire pits, but no, we do not provide or sell firewood. Cottonwood grocery store in Study Butte (about 5 miles away) is the only location nearby to purchase firewood, and many other supplies.

Where are the nearest places to eat?

Starlight Theater, High Sierra Bar and Grill, La Kiva, Chili Pepper Cafe, and Rio Bravo Mexican Restaurant are all within 5 miles of all of our properties.

What are your business hours?

We are available to respond to chats or emails from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., 7 days a week. If you reach out after hours we will respond to you the following morning. If you're currently staying with us we provide after-hours emergency contact information in the PDF document we send out prior to your stay.

I want to talk to someone on the phone or book on the phone!

We do not take bookings over the phone, we use a secure payment system that never allows us access to your payment information. If you would like to book, please do so through our website. If you need help, we are active 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. over chat and email. If you still really would like a phone call, please send us a message through our 'contact us' form or send us an email with your phone number, and we will give you a call as soon as possible!

What is your cancellation policy?

7 days or less before your arrival date – no refund 8 – 14 days before your arrival date – 50% refund 15 days or more before your arrival date – 100% refund We will deduct a $25 cancellation fee from all refunds. If you need to cancel, please send us an email at requesting a cancellation for our records. We do not accept cancellation requests by phone or through our chat system. Our cancellation policy remains in place during the pandemic. If you choose to travel during this time, please understand that things may close in the area. However, if we are forced to close down, we will offer exceptions. We will not make exceptions to the policy even if Big Bend National Park decides to remain closed.

What to expect when visiting the Big Bend

We are in the Chiuhuhuan desert. That means you might come across critters, both indoors and out. Snakes, scorpions, and other wildlife are part of what makes this area so wonderfully wild. Please be aware of your surroundings, and watch your step. (We recommend bringing a flashlight as there are no streetlights in Terlingua!) Utility outages are also a common experience for everyone who lives and frequently visits the area: If you experience a power or internet outage it is likely happening for everyone in the area and can often take over 2 hours to restore, as crews are dispatched out of Alpine. And while our water crew is locally based, we are on a rural system. Outages are rarely longer than a few hours, but they do occasionally happen. If you find yourself experiencing any of these issues while staying with us feel free to reach out by email and we will let you know if we have updates on when things will be up and running again. We provide this information ahead of time so you know what to reasonably expect when visiting the area. We do not provide refunds for situations out of our control, but we will do our best to make sure you are comfortable.

Where do I check in?

We provide self check-in information to your email 5-7 days prior to your arrival with directions and access information. "Self Check-in" means that you're given the information necessary to arrive at your property on your own. This is especially helpful if you're planning a late arrival: no need to be here at any specific time! If you can't find your check-in information be sure to check your "junk" or "spam" folder as they can sometimes end up there!

How can I find availability for the Bubbles?

The most common question we get! You’ll need to use a laptop or desktop computer as the availability calendars for each unit are not optimized for mobile at this time. Bubble 1 Bubble 2 Bubble X Bubble X2 Bubble X3 Bubble X4 After you’ve clicked on one of the links to the Bubble, click Check-In, a calendar will pop up. Scroll through the months using the arrows on the top of the calendar. You’ll see slashes through the days that are not available. Select a check-in and checkout date. The price for your stay will appear.
